John Elway has filled the Denver Broncos' coaching vacancy, hiring former Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox on Thursday.

Elway, the team's executive vice president of football operations, made the announcement via Twitter.

"I am excited to announce that John Fox has agreed to terms to become the 14th head coach in Denver Broncos history," Elway said. "Coach Fox is a great fit for us not only with his coaching ability but also with his personality. He is a dynamic and proven leader who will energize our entire organization."

Fox, 55, replaces Eric Studesville, who filled in as interim head coach after Josh McDaniels was fired in December. Studesville led the team to a 1-3 record after taking over, with the Broncos getting outscored 138-88 in that span.

Fox's first-ever head coaching gig was with the Panthers, whom he took over in 2002. In his nine seasons at the helm, the Panthers went 73-71, including a Super Bowl berth in 2003. The Panthers went 2-14 in 2010 — the worst record in the NFL — and Fox's contract was up, so the team opted to not re-sign him.
