Lifting banner No. 18 to the Garden rafters has become a driving force for the Celtics this season, and not just for the players on the active roster.

Former Celtic Rasheed Wallace reportedly wants to come out of retirement to play in Boston and get another crack at beating the Lakers in the NBA Finals, Stephen A. Smith said during Tuesday’s edition of The Dan Patrick Show.

Since Smith is the one that predicted LeBron James was going to Miami months before it happened, this rumor could have a little more credibility than most.

Wallace turned down $12 million on his contract to return this year because he didn’t want to endure another 82-game season, NBCSports.com reports. The Celtics would need to buy out a contract if Wallace were to come back because there are currently 15 players on the roster.

Celtics general manager Danny Ainge said there would have to be a “whole bunch of injuries” to make room for Wallace on the roster, according to WEEI.com.

“Right now, our center position, we have three healthy centers,” Ainge said on The Big Show. “We have a fourth one that’s not too far away in Perk [Kendrick Perkins].”

Wallace may have achieved one goal when he decided he didn’t want to play another full season in the NBA, but he could be missing out on his ultimate goal if the Celtics head for another showdown with the Lakers this spring.
