Liverpool stars such as Steven Gerrard have recently backed caretaker manager Kenny Dalglish to retain the job following the season. Now, Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has hinted at such as well.

Werner opened up to Sky Sports about his impressions of Dalglish thus far — and what the future may hold.

"I don't like to play hunches, but he certainly is a candidate and he understood that it was a short-term position," Wener said, "but he's certainly done everything not just to impress us, but our fans and players. He is, as everybody knows, an iconic figure in our club's history. He's got many of the qualities that we've admired. He's competent, he certainly understands the club's philosophy, he's excellent at man-management, and we've been very pleased with the progress.

"It's obviously quick and he's only been on the job for a short term, but he's quite aware of the challenge," Werner added. "The players are quite supportive of Kenny ,and I've been very impressed with him."

Werner also reiterated that Liverpool would be taking a long-term, youth-based approach to returning to glory, but that he's hoping to improve the side imminently in the transfer market.

"I would be devastated if we didn't see some improvement," Werner told BBC Sport. "We've identified some targets and hope we will be successful.

"I expect progress, we've resources to improve, we're not driven by spending, but our team needs to get younger. We don't have any budget for this. We believe if there is value in the transfer market, we will attack. This is a crazy market. You think you have a target you can announce, but then something happens.

"We're going to be driven by what's in the interest of the team long-term. We want to improve not just this week but next year. And we feel we've got some targets that hopefully we'll be able to announce," he added.

Liverpool has been heavily linked with the acquisition of 23-year-old Ajax striker Luis Suarez — with owner John Henry meeting with Suarez's agent in London Tuesday night. The Uruguay star would surely fit the bill as a young, long-term impact player who could also improve the squad immediately.
