Ken Daneyko Says NHL Should Allow ‘Open Season’ on Matt Cooke

Everyone seems to have an opinion with what the NHL should do with Penguins agitator Matt Cooke. Following his most recent hit from behind, there are those calling for long suspensions — longer than the four-game ban he was given. Former NHL player Ken Daneyko, however, doesn't think Cooke should be suspended.

Instead, it seems like Daneyko is a bigger fan of some vigilante justice in the NHL to teach Cooke a lesson.

Speaking on The Puck Daddy Radio Show, Daneyko shared his thoughts on Cooke's latest infraction — a hit from behind on Columbus' Fedor Tyutin on Tuesday night.

"Even when I was older, he used to get under my skin so bad that I wanted to two-hand him over the head," Daneyko told the radio show. "And I probably should have, and taken the suspension back then.

"However, he is a valuable player. He does his job. He is an agitator. But right now, enough is enough. The guy can skate, hit … he just doesn't get it, and I don't know if he knows any better."

Instead of suspending Cooke, however, Daneyko offered that perhaps the NHL should let its players take matters into their own hands.

"I'm as crazy as this: The NHL [should declare] open season for one week on Matt Cooke. You won't get suspended. Then we'll see if he'll continue [his behavior] for the rest of the season or his career."
