Now a millionaire, Luis Suarez will never forget where he came from.
"I had a really hard time growing up," Suarez told Liverpool Echo, adding that he had to turn down an invite to a soccer camp because he couldn't afford a pair of shoes. "As you can imagine coming from a large family, we did not have many resources at home, which meant we had to carry on with a very normal life, full of sacrifices."
Suarez detailed his incredible soccer journey that took him from poverty to riches at a very young age.
"I always had clear in my mind that I was not going to give up and that I would soon enough have an opportunity to prove myself," he told Liverpool Echo. "I kept on fighting and working hard."
The story helps explain, at least in part, why Suarez doesn't sweat the small stuff.
"When I look at my past," he said, "I think about all my friends growing up, all the dirt fields and streets of Montevideo that I had played on, but I can't help but to feel very proud of what I have achieved."
