While things remain peaceful in Red Sox camp in southwest Florida, further north in Tampa, the Yankees are still scrambling to make sure they leave no stone unturned in their quest for more pitching.
New York has made it no secret that they would still like to add some more pitching, and they seem to have their eyes on veteran righty Kevin Millwood. According to the New York Post, though, the Yankees are going to have to sweeten the pot some if they want the 36-year-old to sign on the dotted line.
The Post reports that Millwood has turned down the Yankees’ latest offer, an offer that is believed to have been a minor league contract, similar to the one that fellow veteran pitcher Freddy Garcia inked with the Bombers.
The two sides will reportedly continue their talks, but the Yankees have made it pretty clear that they don’t want to give Millwood a major league contract. They’d like to bring him in to compete for a spot in the back of the Yankees’ rotation — along with pitchers like Garcia, Bartolo Colon and Sergio Mitre — but New York is making it clear that would be on their terms.
Millwood lost a career-high 16 games in 2010 with the Orioles, and his 5.10 ERA was the second-worst of his career.
