As the Penguins work to retool their roster before the NHL trade deadline comes to a close, they have to be factoring in the devastating injury to their franchise player.

ESPN.com’s James Murphy reported on Twitter that Sidney Crosby, who is currently sitting out indefinitely with a concussion, could be out for the season. The tweet noted that these Crosby rumors are only “whispers” around Pittsburgh and the league.

On the same day as Murphy’s post and the announcement of Penguins’ defenseman Brook Orpik‘s broken finger, which will keep him out at least four to six weeks, the team announced a trade, acquiring forward Alexei Kovalev from the Ottawa Senators.

This trade is an obvious move to add some immediate offense to the sliding Penguins, who have have lost their top two scorers in Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and now a top defenseman.

Earlier in the week, the Pens acquired left winger James Neal and defenseman Matt Niskanen, sending offensive defenseman Alex Goligoski to the Dallas Stars.
