FORT MYERS, Fla. — Red Sox infielder Brent Dlugach suffered a dislocated left shoulder after a sensational catch in the fifth inning of the team's 5-0 win over Minnesota on Tuesday.
Dlugach, who had just entered the game in place of starting third baseman Kevin Youkilis, sprinted in from his position when Twins shortstop Alexi Casilla popped up a bunt down the line. Dlugach dove and caught the ball right on the line and landed hard, staying motionless for several seconds as players and Red Sox trainer Mike Reinold rushed to his side.
The 27-year-old Dlugach, a longshot to make the major league roster but a potential depth guy at Pawtucket, had the shoulder snapped back into place. He will get scanned Tuesday night and again Wednesday.
"You feel bad," said manager Terry Francona. "Kid's coming in trying to show what he can do. We'll get some scans and do some follow up stuff tomorrow and then see what he needs to do."
Dlugach has had a busy couple of days in camp. He was hit in the rear by a Bobby Jenks pitch in a throwing session Saturday, which was the talk of the camp for a few hours. He then had a difficult game against Minnesota on Monday, committing two errors and grounding into two double plays in the first few innings alone before ripping a double later in the game.
Originally drafted by Detroit, Dlugach was traded to Boston in November.
