Geoffrey Mutai Sets World Record for Men, Caroline Kilel Wins Women’s Boston Marathon

This year’s Boston Marathon had its share of surprises, heartbreak and emotional storylines.

Kenyan runners Geoffrey Mutai and Caroline Kilel both took home first place in 2011's installment, with times of 2:03:01 and 2:22:36, respectively.

Mutai's time is an unofficial world record because of the myriad of differences between marathon courses.

Americans Ryan Hall and Desiree Davila made things interesting during the race, as Davila finished second behind Kilel by just a hair after a spirited push near Hereford Street that left her a few paces off the lead.

Hall finished fourth in the men’s race, but his time, 2:04:05, was the fastest marathon time ever for an American.

The heartbreak came when New Zealand's Kim Smith, who led the women for much of the race, had to be picked up in an ambulance near mile 20 after suffering an apparent injury.

Japan took home two first place medals in the wheelchair division, as Wakako Tsuchida set an unofficial women's course record of 1:28:51, while fellow countryman Masazumi Soejima won the men's wheelchair race.
