Bryan Stow's sister, Erin Collins, still remembers her family's initial reaction when they heard that Bryan had been injured after the Dodgers' Opening Day matchup against his favorite team, the San Francisco Giants.

"The first thing we heard Bryan was in a fight," Collins said in an interview with ESPN. "And our first thought was, Bryan doesn't fight."

As the story began to unravel, Stow's family learned that Bryan had not been involved in a fight — he was the victim of a brutal attack in a parking lot adjacent to Dodger Stadium.

"When we heard what really happened it was shocking," Collins said. "Who does that?"

Since the incident, which occurred on March 31, the Stow family has been sitting vigil at Bryan's hospital bedside, holding on to the slim hope that he will wake up from the medically induced coma doctor's placed him in after suffering brain damage from the beating.

"From the beginning, the doctors have been very honest with us," Collins said "They've always said his chances of ever waking up out of that coma are slim. We're holding on to those slim chances."

Doctors told the Stow family from the get-go that this battle will not be easy for Bryan. They said that nine out of 10 patients wouldn't have survived the first surgery that reduced the swelling in his brain.

Despite the difficult prognosis, the Stows are holding onto their faith and staying strong for Bryan.

"We just have to have faith, pray and hope and remember how strong Bryan is. He's stubborn and he's got a lot of willpower. We just keep telling him, 'Hey Bryan, you can do this. You can do this.'"
