Former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel was charged Monday with a Class D felony for a theft at the Belterra Casino in Indiana, according to Pro Football Talk.

According to KMBC 9 News, Vrabel was observed by an enforcement agent taking bottles of alcohol from a deli without paying for them. NFL Network had a different report, suggesting the incident related to confusion over the number of beers on a bar tab.

Vrabel was released from jail Monday after posting a $600 bond. If convicted, Vrabel could face a sentence of six months to three years in prison, according to the report.

After PFT released the report, Vrabel issued a statement through his agent, Neil Cornrich.

"It was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and I take full responsibility for the miscommunication," Vrabel said. "I feel comfortable that after talking with the appropriate parties, we will resolve this matter."

Vrabel, who was traded to the Chiefs in 2009 along with quarterback Matt Cassel, is a respected member of the NFLPA's Executive Committee. He is expected to be in court Wednesday in Minnesota for a preliminary hearing that the NFL players hope will result in an injunction to block the lockout.

Vrabel, 35, played for the Patriots from 2001-08.
