Top 10 Reasons Why Opening Day Is Greatest Date on Sports Calendar Baseball cheated itself a bit this year. There was a time when every team started the season on the same day, providing pageantry in parks across the country and a full allotment of highlights for the nightly news.

This year, 12 teams start their season in March and the other 18 in April before everyone finally appears on the same schedule on the third day of the season.

Despite the increasingly staggered start (it’s a TV thing), baseball’s beginning is unlike any in all of sports. Its symbolism is unmatched, its hope ubiquitous. We were teased a bit with six games Thursday, but for all intents and purposes, the season gets going Friday with 11 more games, including the much-anticipated matchup between the Red Sox and the defending American League-champion Texas Rangers.

As we prepare for that matchup and many others on the first day of April, here are the top 10 reasons why Opening Day is the finest date on the sports calendar.
