The Red Sox placed outfielder Darnell McDonald on the 15-day disabled list with a left quad strain prior to Thursday's meeting with Detroit.

Outfielder Josh Reddick was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to take McDonald's spot on the active roster and, with J.D. Drew still sidelined with a hamstring issue, immediately placed into the starting lineup.

McDonald received his first at-bat in 20 days during Wednesday's 14-2 win at Cleveland. He is just 3-for-21 (.143) with a home run in 19 games this year.

Drew is out of the lineup for the second straight day. Had he been prepared to come back, the team might have been able to wait out McDonald's issue rather than place him on the DL. However, if Drew's condition lingers and McDonald is out for a few days or more, the club would be strapped in the outfield.

Mike Cameron started Wednesday and went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He will be the fourth outfielder Thursday.
