Rumors of retirement began to swirl around Yankees catcher Jorge Posada on Saturday after he asked to be removed from the New York lineup roughly 45 minutes before the start of his game against the Red Sox. Now, his wife, Laura, is supporting him via Twitter.

Posada’s wife cited back stiffness as the reason for her husband being out of the lineup. She later tweeted, “Thank you tho those who support Jorge and believe in him. He will answer questions shortly.”

Posada, who is hitting just .165 this season, was supposed to bat ninth in the Yankees order as the designated hitter on Saturday. Apparently upset, though, he asked to removed and was replaced by Andruw Jones.

Jack Curry of YES reported that Posada felt “insulted” and “threw a hissy fit.”

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that there was no injury and only that Posada had taken himself out of the lineup.

Posada spoke to the media after the game to explain his side of the story. Click here to watch.
