After a shortened regular season of baseball because of World War I, the Boston Red Sox clinched the American League and advanced to the World Series in 1918.
The Sox defeated the Chicago Cubs in six games behind home run leader Babe Ruth to capture the club's fifth World Series title. Boston won in front of a crowd of 15,238 at Fenway Park on Sept. 11, 1918. Ruth would be traded the next season, bringing the "Curse of the Bambino" to Boston.
Along with the World Series title at Fenway, the park hosted a war memorial in May earlier in the season in remembrance of all those lost in the war.
