Mavericks guard Jason Terry became legendary in Dallas for getting a tattoo of the Larry O'Brien Trophy prior to the start of the 2010-11 season and then proceeding to win an NBA championship. Now, the former Sixth Man of the Year thinks the organization should give him the ultimate honor by eventually raising his No. 31 to the rafters.
Terry expressed that sentiment Friday in an interview with Yahoo Sports. When asked why he should join Brad Davis and Rolando Blackman (and, unquestionably, Dirk at some point) as the only Mavs players to have their jerseys retired, he reponded:
"To see my jersey go up there … a guy that has sacrificed so much by coming to Dallas and over the years, all the hard work we put in to try to be champions, and then to be the only point guard to take their team to the Finals in '05-'06, but to finally get there this year and win it?
"Sixth Man of the Year two years ago — [and] should've been the last three years? (laughs) You know what? I'm very humble, I'm a hungry guy, but sometimes you got to toot your own horn. And if it means telling them, 'Move over, Ro, move over, Brad Davis,' then that's what you got to do."
Terry signed with Dallas before the 2004-05 season after All-Star Steve Nash bolted for Phoenix in free agency. He and Dirk were the only two players to compete in both of the Mavericks' Finals appearances.
