Jonathan Papelbon Ejected by Tony Randazzo in Ninth Inning of Red Sox-A’s Game

Jonathan Papelbon is a fiery guy, and on Saturday afternoon, home plate umpire Tony Randazzo threw gasoline all over that fire.

The Red Sox closer had already given up four runs, surrendering a 7-3 lead in the process, when Randazzo called a borderline pitch a ball. Papelbon turned his back to Randazzo, apparently upset about the call, and then turned and walked back toward the mound.

From there, though, Randazzo left his post behind the plate and walked out to the mound. This set Papelbon off, who charged at Randazzo to argue with him. The closer was then promptly ejected. It's unclear whether or not Papelbon bumped the umpire in the argument.

Catcher Jason Varitek was also ejected by Randazzo earlier in the inning.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia replaced Varitek and Bobby Jenks came on for Papelbon. Jenks was able to get out of the inning without further damage, sending the game to extra innings.
