Considering the slow starts that Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz has endured the past couple of seasons, it's been quite a surprise that the slugger has been contributing All-Star numbers through the first two months of this season. Big Papi added to his stellar season by being named American League Player of the Week for the week of May 30-June 5.

In that span, Ortiz hit .545 with six extra base hits (including two homers), six RBI and five runs. He had at least one hit in every game, including five multi-hit games.

His 3-for-4 performance on Sunday helped the Red Sox finish off a sweep of the Oakland Athletics. Ortiz finished the month of May with a club-leading .342 average to go with 10 home runs. He has 13 home runs on the season, good for fifth in the AL.

A couple of Ortiz's teammates were also up for the award. Carl Crawford, the recipient of the award last week, hit .348 with 8 RBI this week. Adrian Gonzalez also had six solid games, hitting .423 with three home runs and five RBI.

The last time Ortiz won the award was the week of August 20-26, 2007. Big Papi was co-player of the week that week, sharing the award with teammate Mike Lowell.
