Jaromir Jagr Signs $3.3 Million Contract With Philadelphia Flyers, Says He Left Higher Offers on Table

Jaromir Jagr’s comeback to the NHL at 39 years old may have been fueled by a desire to win another cup or to end a successful career in the league where it all began. On Saturday, Jagr wanted to assure one thing was not fueling his desire to come back: Money.

After signing a one-year, $3.3 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday, the winger told reporters during a Saturday conference call that "there were a lot more teams with a higher offer than Philadelphia."

The former MVP reportedly received a one-year offer from the Pittsburgh Penguins for $2 million. The Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens were also interested in the 6-foot-3 veteran.

"I didn't think I was going [to Philadelphia], but after the conversation with the coaches and Chris Pronger, I started to like it," Jagr said.

Jagr is expected to replace Ville Leino, who had a 19-34-53 line last season. Leino signed with the Buffalo Sabres on Friday.

After 17 seasons in the NHL, Jagr signed with Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia in 2008. During the 2007-08 season, Jagr's last season in the NHL, he scored 25 goals to go with 46 assists.
