FOXBORO, Mass. — The Patriots opened training camp with a walkthrough practice Thursday morning at Gillette Stadium with 73 of their 87 players in attendance.
The 14 absentees included seven veterans and seven unsigned draft picks: cornerback Kyle Arrington, running back BenJarvus-Green Ellis, guard Logan Mankins, offensive lineman Nick Kaczur, tight end Alge Crumpler, defensive lineman Myron Pryor, defensive lineman Marcus Stroud, quarterback Ryan Mallett, cornerback Ras-I Dowling, running backs Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley, defensive back Malcolm Williams, offensive lineman Marcus Cannon and tackle Nate Solder.
Arrington and Green-Ellis are still unsigned. Kaczur is expected to be released, and there are conflicting reports about Stroud, who may or may not be cut. Crumpler is still reportedly recovering from shoulder surgery.
Due to the unique post-lockout rules this week, it's also unclear when Mankins can begin practicing after signing his franchise tender. The same is true for running back Sammy Morris, who agreed to a deal Wednesday.
