Tension on the gridiron during the hot summer months is nothing new. It’s not rare for a fight or two to break out among guys competing for a roster spot as HBO’s Hard Knocks so eloquently showed us.

But the fight-turned-all-out-brawl that broke out in a Louisiana 7-on-7 high school game defied old-fashioned competition.

A verbal argument quickly morphed into pushing and shoving between players from Louisiana’s Plaquemine High and Woodlawn High. Fists started flying and players from both teams ran in and escalated the fight, which included players throwing their helmets and an all-out Superman dive by one player.

The scrimmage was held at a neutral location in Baton Rouge, and the players wore no padding other than a helmet.

Play was physical from the opening drive, but got out of hand after a Plaquemine defender threw down a Woodlawn player, according to Baton Rouge’s WAFB. The fight occurred about 25 minutes into the scrimmage.

Coaches from both sides needed about five minutes to break up the fight, and the game was called off after that.
