Charlie Furbush Proving to Be Thorn in Red Sox' Side Early in Major League Career Charlie Furbush grew up just a short drive from Fenway Park in Portland, Maine. Still in the early stages of his major league career, he has proven to be a thorn in the Red Sox' side.

Furbush spun seven stellar innings to outduel Tim Wakefield and lead Seattle to a 5-3 win over Boston on Sunday afternoon. It was far and away the best outing of his young career — just a bit better than a quality relief outing he had earlier in the season against, you guessed it, the Red Sox.

Overall, Furbush has yielded one run on six hits while striking out 12 in 12 innings versus Boston this season. His five scoreless innings out of Detroit's bullpen on May 27 kept the Red Sox at bay in a game that saw the Tigers' starter knocked out early.

His start Sunday trumped it.

Furbush did not allow a hit until there was one out in the fourth. Boston had a sacrifice fly later in that inning for its only run off the lefty. He allowed just two hits over his final three frames and left with a 5-1 lead.

Twelve of Furbush's 35 career strikeouts have come versus Boston, and the 25-year-old also has a 0.75 ERA against the Sox. He owns a 5.06 mark in 19 games against all others.
