Is Dave Roberts' Steal or the 'Vibrating Building' During the '08 Stanley Cup Playoffs a Bigger Boston Sports Moment? Dave Robert’s steal against the Yankees squares off against Jack Edward’s declaration that the “building is vibrating” in the first round of Boston’s Greatest Sports Moment tournament.

Dave Roberts pulls off ‘The Steal’The whole world knew he was going to steal second base. After Kevin Millar drew a walk in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, that’s exactly what Dave Roberts did. With the Red Sox down 4-3 and facing elimination, 90 feet never looked so far. After nearly getting picked off, Roberts took off on Mariano Rivera’s first pitch to Bill Mueller. Jorge Posada threw a strike to a covering Derek Jeter, but the left hand of Roberts beat the tag. Muller singled, and Roberts finished off what is now known as “The Steal” by scoring the tying run. The steal sparked the greatest comeback in Red Sox history, as Boston took Game 4 and won four straight en route to capturing the American League pennant.

After falling behind 3-1 in the series, the Bruins responded with a 5-1 road win in Game 5 to force a Game 6 in Boston. Feeding off the energy of the home crowd, the Bruins fought back from deficits of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 in the most electric hockey atmosphere in Boston since the lockout. Phil Kessel — scratched in Games 2, 3 and 4 — put on a show in Game 6 with two goals. His second score sent Bruins fans into a state of hysteria and prompted NESN announcer Jack Edwards to declare, “This building is vibrating!” Marco Sturm sealed the win with a goal with 2:37 remaining, as the Black and Gold held on for a 5-4 win to force a seventh game. Though the Bruins were eliminated by the Canadiens two nights later in Montreal, New England hockey fans fondly remember Game 6 as the night hockey was reborn in Beantown.
