Patriots rookie linebacker Christian Cox suffered a neck injury that has yet to be officially diagnosed as the result of a cheap headbutt after the whistle from a member of the Jaguars in the preseason opener.

The Patriots placed Cox on injured reserve to end his season Friday after he cleared waivers.

Cox, who completed a two-year Mormon mission to Brazil during college, has received multiple opinions about his neck injury, according to his agent, David Fish. As of Friday afternoon, the severity of the injury was still unclear. Fish said Cox felt like he was healthy enough to practice again right away, but the undrafted rookie from Utah understood the seriousness of the medical process.
