Ryan Kalish, Junichi Tazawa Make Returns to Pawtucket

The long road back for two Red Sox prospects has led them back to Pawtucket.

Outfielder Ryan Kalish, out of action since April with shoulder and neck injuries, was reinstated from the disabled list Monday, according to the PawSox. He has not played for Pawtucket since April 21, when he hurt his left shoulder making a diving catch against Syracuse.

Kalish, one of the real bright spots in Boston’s injury-plagued 2010 season, managed to get into two rehab games in Lowell last week, going 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The 23-year-old Kalish was thought by many to be the Red Sox right fielder of the future. Because of the shoulder injury, the lingering neck issues and the way Josh Reddick has played with the big club, that scenario is now up in the air. Still, it's a significant milestone for him to get back to Pawtucket, where he was hitting .236 with seven RBIs at the time of the injury.

It may be even more significant for right-hander Junichi Tazawa, who, more than 16 months removed from Tommy John surgery, has been promoted from Double-A Portland. The right-hander made six starts with Single-A Salem this year, posting a 6.05 ERA, before going 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA with the Sea Dogs. However, he was 2-0 with a 1.56 ERA over his last five outings, one of which was a start.

Tazawa was signed as an international free agent at the end of 2008. He was 9-7 with a 2.55 ERA in 20 starts in a 2009 split between Portland and Pawtucket before getting a late-season call-up and making four starts with the Red Sox.
