The Patriots' 34-10 preseason loss to the Lions on Saturday night featured its share of dull spots, and few were ready to take away any positives from the performance.
The offensive line was porous, allowing quarterback Tom Brady to complete only 12 of 22 pass attempts. Wide receiver Chad Ochocinco was held without a catch and Wes Welker, who had three receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown, suffered a neck injury.
Then there were the breakdowns in the defensive secondary, which surrendered 373 yards through the air and four TDs.
"It was just a bad night all around," Brady said. "We don't make excuses for it. It just wasn't a good night."
Oh yeah, and the Pats committed 10 penalties.
It's difficult to know where to start, but the Patriots need to make considerable progress by Thursday, when they host the Giants in the fourth and final exhibition game.
After that, the games count for real, and an off-kilter game against the Dolphins in Week 1 won't be so easy to overlook.
