'A Football Life: Bill Belichick' Set to Show Whole New Side of Hall of Fame Coach on NFL Network There may be no more misunderstood man in sports than Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

The man most responsible for such misunderstanding, of course, may be Belichick himself, as he’s sacrificed his own personal image in favor of what’s best for the team. As the future Hall of Famer’s coaching career winds down, however, he may be opening doors that have been closed for decades.

Belichick agreed to wear a microphone for the entirety of the 2009 season for an NFL Films special, offering fans a look inside the greatness of one of football’s best coaches in history.

“Bill Belichick doesn’t only make history — he studies it, he understands his place in it, and he appreciates our desire to capture it,” NFL Films president Steve Sabol said in a statement. “Like Vince Lombardi‘s Packers in 1967, Belichick and the Patriots gave us access to his football life and what we created is a portrait of the coach, the father, the taskmaster and — most importantly — the man”

The show provides behind-the-scenes access to meetings with Tom Brady and the rest of the Patriots, boat trips on Nantucket and the coaching decisions that went into the infamous fourth-and-2 in Indianapolis back in ’09. The preview for the show also showed Belichick get choked up when visiting the Giants’ old locker room and meeting room, where he first made his name as an NFL coach.

Watch the preview of the show by clicking here. The two-part special will air Thursday, Sept. 15, at 9 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 22, at 10 p.m.
