It's no secret that the Red Sox have one of the largest fan bases in Major League Baseball, but now Facebook can prove it. After accruing 1.2 million fans since Jan. 1, the Red Sox announced that they have surpassed 3 million Facebook fans.

President/CEO Larry Lucchino said in a news release he is "proud" that the Red Sox have such a large following.

"We have put an increased emphasis on our social media efforts this past season, particularly through Facebook and Twitter, and are among the league leaders in both fans and followers," Lucchino said in a statement. "We will continue to engage Red Sox Nation in new and dynamic ways with the ultimate goal of enhancing the experience of all fans, both inside the ballpark as well as online."

Boston's Facebook fan following is more global than local, as only 25 percent of the Facebook fans are from New England.

In addition to the second-largest Facebook following, the Red Sox' Twitter account ranks fourth among MLB teams. The Red Sox also have a Spanish Twitter and Facebook page.
