Clay Buchholz Activated Prior to Regular-Season Finale in Baltimore, Could Be Factor If Red Sox Advance Clay Buchholz has been activated from the disabled list in time for the Red Sox' regular-season finale in Baltimore, Terry Francona told reporters Wednesday.

Buchholz will not pitch in the game unless it is a blowout one way or another, or if it goes deep into extra innings. However, the activation shows that he is ready to contribute if and when the team gets into the postseason.

That first contribution could come Thursday in a potential play-in game at Tampa Bay. Buchholz is not in a position to start that game, but if the Sox need to piece it together an inning at a time, the right-hander could be available for a few outs out of the bullpen.

Francona has not said who he will start in that game, if it ever occurs. John Lackey and Tim Wakefield are both candidates to go on short rest.
