FOXBORO, Mass. — Linebacker Jerod Mayo wants the Patriots' defense to gain a little more recognition for doing the right things, and it sounds like there's motivation to play with more of an edge this season.

"We definitely have a chip on our shoulder as a defense," Mayo said. "We're trying to go out there each and every week and pitch a shutout. That's just our goal. Hopefully we can go out there this week and start off on a good note."

So far, he's sure they can accomplish that objective.

"I feel confident," Mayo said. "I feel like we have a bunch of guys on the defensive side of the ball that are hungry and tough enough to play the game."

Mayo was voted as one of the Patriots' six captains after Wednesday's practice, and it's the third consecutive year that he's been given that honor. Thought it was predictable, Mayo was excited to receive the recognition.

"It feels good," Mayo said. "It's a great honor. Hopefully I can lead these guys to success."
