BOSTON — The Red Sox will start Kyle Weiland on Tuesday against Baltimore, but are still waiting to announce a starter for one of the two games of a doubleheader the day before.

John Lackey is on tap to pitch in one of those games versus the Orioles on Monday. Andrew Miller, who threw in relief Thursday night against Tampa Bay, is one candidate to pitch during the doubleheader. Another would be Erik Bedard, but he has not made any real progress in his recovery from a lat strain.

The eventual announcement will depend upon how the club gets through the final three games of the Rays series.

"I don't think we can name somebody yet just because it may depend on how we get there, who we use," manager Terry Francona said. "Certainly with the call-ups it’s not as critical if somebody goes six innings so it may depend on how we get there."

Francona seems reluctant to give the start to Alfredo Aceves.

"If you're gonna start him, and I don't doubt he would do really well, I think he could handle five innings and probably do pretty well, but then you're losing him for three days beforehand and three days after," Francona said of Aceves. "And right now I don't think that makes us a better team."

Josh Beckett will be lined up to start the series finale on Wednesday, which is also the final home game of the regular season.
