Report: Jody Shelley to Receive NHL Suspension of Five-Plus Games Not even 24 hours had passed before the hockey world had watched the NHL's video explaining how dangerous hits will be enforced by the league office when Brendan Shanahan was given his first opportunity to make a statement.

Flyers forward Jody Shelley leveled Darryl Boyce on Wednesday night in a preseason game against Toronto, earning himself a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct. Shelley should expect some more punishment soon, though.

Shelley will receive a suspension of five-plus games, according to Nick Kypreos of sportsnet.ca. Kypreos also reported that Shelley waived his right to an in-person hearing with the league.

Shelley was handed a two-game suspension last year for boarding Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid, who was touching a puck for an icing call in Boston.

Shanahan, who took the position of Colin Campbell, seems eager to prove there's a new sheriff in town when it comes to supplemental discpline, and the Shelley hit will go a long way in setting a tone for the regular season.

"Jody typically tries to play an honest game out there, so I'm not sure where we'll go from there," Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette said Wednesday night. "The league's looking at incidents, so the fact that there was a call and a game misconduct, I'm sure it'll get looked at. But hopefully, nothing will happen. He's a fairly honest player."
