In the first surprising move of the weekend of roster cuts, the Patriots have released defensive end Eric Moore, according to a league source.

Moore played well for the Patriots down the stretch of the 2010 season, recording a pair of sacks after getting signed in December, and he was expected to contend for starting-caliber reps in 2011. With the additions of Mark Anderson and Andre Carter, though, the Pats decided to part ways with Moore.

New England has also released Aaron Lavarias and Alex Silvestro, according to sources, and it has reportedly cut ties with sixth-round draft pick Markell Carter. Lavarias, Silvestro and Carter are all strong candidates to land on the practice squad if they clear waivers.
