Wes Welker Still Doesn't Know Wally Pipp, Despite Bill Belichick's Quip FOXBORO, Mass. — Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker still hasn't looked up Wally Pipp.

Head coach Bill Belichick told Welker during a 2009 preseason game that he was going to get Wally Pipp'd on punt return duty after Julian Edelman's touchdown scamper, which was captured during NFL Films' season-long documentary on Belichick.

Welker, who sat out that game due to an injury, told Belichick he didn't understand the reference. Pipp, of course, was replaced by Lou Gehrig because of an injury, and he never got his job back.

Welker said Friday he still doesn't know about Pipp.

"I still don't," Welker said. "No, no, I don't know who Wally Pipp is, but something tells me I'm not falling in the same category."

Interestingly enough, Welker and Edelman have each returned 32 punts in the regular season since Belichick's Pipp quip. However, Edelman has seized the job since the start of the 2010 season, returning 26 punts to Welker's five.
