How Important Is a Pitching Coach to MLB Team? The parade out of Fenway Park continued Friday, as pitching coach Curt Young left the Red Sox in order to sign a one-year deal with his longtime team, the Oakland A's.

After the September collapse that left the Red Sox outside of the playoff picture, Young is certainly to blame for at least part of that forgettable performance. But how much?

With veterans like Josh Beckett, John Lackey and Jon Lester anchoring the staff, and with reliable arms in Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon at the back end of the bullpen, you could wonder how much impact the pitching coach can have one way or the other.

Obviously, a pitching coach can play a bigger role with some younger pitchers, and Young in particular had his hands full while juggling injuries and managing healthy bodies in the rotation and bullpen.

The Red Sox finished 22nd in the league with a 4.20 ERA, but they also sent Tim Wakefield, Kyle Weiland and Andrew Miller to the mound several times during the stretch run in must-win games. If that trio didn't perform, is the pitching coach to blame?

It's largely a chicken-or-the-egg argument, but what's your take?
