Jonjo Shelvey's Debut Goal for Blackpool Delights the On-Loan Liverpool Midfielder (Video) Somewhat lost amidst the buildup to the Merseyside derby was the news that Jonjo Shelvey joined Championship side Blackpool on a three-month loan. The 19 year-old exploded into the headlines Saturday when he scored from a 30 yard free-kick in his Blackpool debut. He told Blackpool’s website that the goal capped a “perfect day,” as they trounced Bristol City 5-0.

“It was a perfect day for me, I had my family in the stands and I capped it off with a great goal.” He said. “I just thought I’m going to smash it and see what happens. It came off nicely and started spinning away from the keeper so it was a good goal for me personally.

“The manager has told me to go and express myself and for a player in my position that’s what I like to do.”

Shelvey joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2010. He has made 22 appearances for the club, including 15 last season in the English Premier League. A knee injury cost him three months of action last season, but he did return for the last six league games.

New signings Jordan Henderson, Stuart Downing and Charlie Adam have all blocked Shelvey’s path into the first team. He has only made one appearance for the Reds this season, playing 14 minutes in the team’s 3-1 Carling Cup victory over Exeter on Aug. 24.

He approached Kenny Dalglish about a loan in order to play regular games, and the Liverpool manager consented.

Shelvey was also named in Stuart Pearce’s England U-21 squad for the upcoming matches against Iceland and Norway.

The loan expires on Dec. 31 and he will have several options from which to choose. He could return to Liverpool and contend for first-team minutes. He might extend his stay with Blackpool through the end of the season. He could also join another Premier League club on loan to gain experience at a higher level.
