Michael Irvin Calls Wes Welker Best Wide Receiver in NFL There's no denying that Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker is one of the best wideouts in the NFL today, but is he the best in football? According to Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, Welker is the best receiver in the league right now.

As Larry Brown Sports points out, Irvin was a guest on Jim Rome Is Burning, and he had the ultimate praise for Welker, who continues to torch defenses.

"If you ask, 'Who is the best receiver in the league?' I say it's Wes Welker," Irvin told Jim Rome. "His versatility makes him one of the best. Period. And we don't want to hear that, because he's not a [6-foot-4], 230-pound Andre Johnson or Brandon Marshall or Calvin Johnson. He goes inside and he plays outside. Man, I love Wes Welker."

Irvin, who suffered a tough knee injury during his playing days, also praised Welker for his ability to return after suffering a similar injury and playing at such a high level upon returning.

The numbers at least back up Irvin's claim this season. Welker leads the NFL in both catches (40) and receiving yards (614). Welker had another incredible game on Sunday afternoon in Oakland. He had nine catches for 158 yards and a touchdown in a 31-13 Patriots win.
