At least six top flight soccer players have been killed and 28 people have been critically injured in a bus crash near the city of Atakpame in Togo, the country's government has said.

The bus plunged into a ravine and caught fire, The Associated Press reports.

The Etoile Filante team was reportedly on its way to Sokode for Sunday's league game against Semassi at the time of the crash. It's believed that a tire bursted, which caused the bus to flip over. Some of the victims reportedly burnt to death.

Togo President Faure Gnassingbe reportedly ordered that the injured be taken to a military hospital in Lome, which is Togo's capital and largest city.
