With the general managers meeting taking place next week in Milwaukee, Ben Cherington and Theo Epstein may be able to finally get together to settle the compensation issues over Epstein resigning to join the Chicago Cubs.

The two have been busy lately interviewing for their vacant managerial positions, and the commissioner's office has extended the time frame for a deal. Cherington seems confident that he and Epstein can come to an equal agreement for both clubs when he addressed the media at Fenway Park Wednesday.

"Theo and I have spoken a couple of times since I talked to you guys last," Cherington told reporters Wednesday. "We traded some ideas and don't have anything to report yet, but there's at least been a couple more conversations. The Commissioner's Office is giving us some leeway on it if we feel like there's progress being made. "I think we'll give ourselves until next week."

There has been no word on whether or not commissioner Bud Selig expects to step in as arbitrator if a deal cannot be reached in the timeframe.
