Gene Lamont a Surprise Addition to Red Sox' Managerial Hunt, But Baseball Lifer Has Plenty of ExperienceThe one thing that all of the men the Red Sox have interviewed or are going to interview all have at least one pretty important thing in common — they all have little or even no major league managerial experience.

That will change Saturday when baseball lifer Gene Lamont interviews for the Red Sox' vacant managerial position.

Lamont, who spent time on the Red Sox staff in 2001 as third base coach, brings in far and away the most managerial experience at the big league level of any of the candidates the Sox will or have interviewed as of the end of this week.

It's been some time since Lamont has been the man in charge at the major league level. He last managed in the bigs in 2000 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been keeping busy in the coaching ranks.

Posted .551 winning percentage over four seasons in Chicago. Managed Pittsburgh Pirates from 1997-2000. Posted .456 winning percentage over four years.

Other coaching experience: Has completed 47 seasons in professional baseball. Served 2011 season as Detroit Tigers' third base coach. Managed Philadelphia Phillies' Triple-A team in 2005. Served as Red Sox third base coach in 2001 before spending 2002-04 as Houston Astros' third base coach. Spent six years as Jim Leyland's third base coach in Pittsburgh.
