The Jerry Sandusky situation has created a complete mess at Penn State. And while Sandusky remains at his State College residence awaiting his preliminary hearing, his attorney, Joe Amendola, spoke on his behalf Wednesday.

Amendola said his client learned of head football coach Joe Paterno's announcement that he will retire and is "distraught" over the latest developments at Penn State, according to the Centre Daily Times.

Sandusky maintains that he's innocent, but Amendola said the former Penn State defensive coordinator is "saddened by what is happening to the reputation" of the university.

"He feels absolutely awful," Amendola said. "They're taking down an entire athletic department."

Amendola, who refused to comment further on the case, told the Centre Daily Times that he spoke with Sandusky Wednesday morning and that he is already at work on his defense, although he is still in the early stages of assembling a team.

Amendola noted that recent reports have surfaced that Sandusky confessed wrongdoing in regards to an alleged 1998 incident with a boy in a shower.

"Jerry never said that, but he did apologize for being in the shower — not for sexual activity," Amendola said.
