It turns out the "The Bernie" isn't that egregious after all.
Perry Hall High School (Md.) principal George Roberts announced in a news conference on Friday morning that the school's boy's soccer team would be able to finish its season, the Perry Hall Patch reports.
Roberts cancelled the team's season earlier this week after he received negative reaction from an opposing school after the Perry Hall team did "The Bernie" dance during a recent tournament game. The dance, inspired by a scene from Weekend at Bernie's II, was deemed "sexually suggestive" by parents of the opposing team. The original ruling, Roberts said, called the dance move "inappropriate behavior."
Perry Hall students showed up early on Thursday to protest the decision outside of the school, and on Friday, Roberts related.
"The intent of my original decision was not to punish the students, but to preserve the dignity and character of an educational-based athletic program," Roberts said in a carefully crafted statement on Friday morning. "Perry Hall High School does not now and will not in the future condone acts of unsportsmanlike behavior."
The Perry Hall team returned to practice Friday and will play Blake High school in the Class 4A North region semifinal on Saturday.
