Report: Alex Gonzalez No Longer an Everyday Shortstop, May Make Sense as Backup for Red Sox

Former Red Sox shortstop Alex Gonzalez is a free agent and can still field the position well, but fans should be wary if their team pursues him as an everyday shortstop, according to ESPN.

Gonzalez, whom Boston fans remember as the clean-fielding infielder who preceded Julio Lugo, is an even worse offensive player now than he was in 2006, if Keith Law's analysis is any indication.

"He has mistake power and can play shortstop, but he has posted an OBP below .295 in each of the last three years," Law writes on ESPN.com (registration may be required). "As the 25th man on a roster, he's a better choice than yet another right-handed middle reliever.

"As an everyday shortstop, he should drive fans to grab their pitchforks."

Law does not explicitly state the Red Sox are or should be interested in Gonzalez, but notes the Red Sox' infield situation could be due for a shakeup after the team picked up Marco Scutaro's option.
