The Red Sox need starting pitching help — that’s no secret. And in order to obtain it, the team could focus its attention on low-cost, veteran options, such as Freddy Garcia.

In fact, the Sox have called about Garcia, according to the Boston Herald’s Michael Silverman. Silverman said that Boston general manager Ben Cherington is seeking “buy-low” starting pitchers on the open market.

The 35-year-old Garcia is coming off a season with the Yankees in which he went 12-8 with a 3.62 ERA in 26 games (25 starts).

Garcia, who was selected to two All-Star Games with the Mariners in 2001 and 2002, has spent 13 seasons in the bigs. He never quite caught on with a team after leaving Seattle, struggling and battling injuries during stops with the White Sox, Phillies and Tigers. The veteran right-hander’s strong season in New York suggests he still has some left in the tank, though.

Garcia is 145-95 with a 4.09 ERA in 329 career games (327 starts).
