Report: Red Sox Never Made Offer to Joe Nathan Before Closer Signed Two-Year Deal With RangersThe Red Sox are looking for a new closer now that Jonathan Papelbon has left for Philadelphia. Apparently, the team wasn’t looking too hard at Joe Nathan.

The Sox had spoken to Nathan but never officially made him an offer, according to WEEI.com. That would suggest then that the team isn’t all too bummed out that Nathan agreed to a two-year, $14.5 million deal with the Texas Rangers.

Nathan had been a dominant closer for the Minnesota Twins up until 2010, when he missed the entire season following Tommy John surgery. In 2011, he had a solid comeback year and the team eased him back into the closer role. Nathan locked down all 11 of his save opportunities in the second half of the season after reclaiming the role from Matt Capps, who is also a free agent.

The Red Sox were a little wary of Nathan’s age and injury history, according to the report. Nathan turned 37 on Tuesday and, along with Francisco Cordero, is the oldest free agent closer on the market.

Ryan Madson and Heath Bell are among the other free-agent closers who remain unsigned, if the Red Sox choose to go to free agency to find Papelbon’s replacement. Daniel Bard could also be an option for the team to consider as an in-house candidate.
