Tom Brady Disappointed Matt Cassel Won’t Get to Play Monday Against Patriots

FOXBORO, Mass. — So much for Matt Cassel's reunion.

Monday would have served as an entertaining opportunity for Cassel to reunite with some of his former Patriots teammates when the Chiefs visit Gillette Stadium. And, in all likelihood, the New England crowd would have had the chance to thank Cassel for leading the Patriots to an 11-5 record when he replaced Tom Brady in 2008.

Instead, Cassel won't play after suffering a hand injury during Sunday's loss to the Broncos. Brady said Wednesday he felt bad for Cassel — not so much for the timing of the injury, but because Brady knows how lousy it is to watch his team take the field without him.

"It sucks to be injured," Brady said. "There's nobody that goes through a football season and doesn't get injured. You just hope it isn't really a permanent injury. [Cassel] is a tough guy. He's as tough as anybody I've ever been around. I was disappointed for him that he won't be able to be out there."
