Which NFL Head Coach Will Be Fired Next?

Which NFL Head Coach Will Be Fired Next? It’s that time of year in the NFL, when coaches with bad records need to start looking over their shoulders and screening their phone calls.

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio was the first on the chopping block. After getting his team off to a 3-8 start, the head coach was reportedly released Tuesday morning. If a 3-8 record is indicative of the need for change at head coach, several other front men could be in trouble.

First, the worst: the winless Colts, and their head coach Jim Caldwell. Of course, Peyton Manning‘s injury was a monumental blow right from the start, but you’d figure the talent on that squad could have picked up at least one win by now. Bad personnel decisions have been part of the problem, but a competent head coach could have drawn up a game plan to beat the Browns, Chiefs or Jaguars at home even with Curtis Painter at quarterback.

The Dolphins started out 0-7, but refused to give up on their season and won three straight games. That didn’t necessarily help their standings in the “Suck for Luck” campaign, but it may have helped head coach Tony Sparano keep his job through the 2011 season. That’s evidence that he hasn’t lost his team, but after a loss to the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, Sparano may be just a couple more losses away from losing his job.

Norv Turner, meanwhile, built a reputation for months-long stretches of abysmal football as head coach of the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders, and took that with him to San Diego. After a 4-1 start, the Chargers have lost six straight, and would need a miracle to make the playoffs. At this point, it’s hard to envision a worse scenario than the Chargers making the playoffs and saving Turner’s job.

It started promisingly for Turner, but it has been a nightmare from the start for Andy Reid and the “Dream Team” Eagles. The Eagles offense is a top 10 unit in both passing and rushing, but they have the second-most turnovers of any team in the league and are barely in the top half of the league in scoring. Several of Philadelphia’s big time free agent acquisitions have yet to pay off, and typically, when a team goes all-in and misses the playoffs, the coach is the first one to go.
