Initially, Gretzky had said he wouldn't particpate in the Winter Classic because of holiday plans he had with his family. Despite that, Rangers GM Glen Sather reached out to Gretzky, according to ProHockeyTalk.
Gretzky spoke to Sather for about 45 minutes and is now considering changing his mind.
"I really respect the Rangers doing that. That’s classy of [Sather], Mike Keenan [Rangers' alumni team coach] and the Dolan family. So I told Glen I would think about it," said Gretzky.
Gretzky played the final three years of his career with New York where he led the league in assists twice. Despite his short time in the Big Apple, there are sure to be many fans who would like to see Gretzky back on the ice regardless of what uniform he wears.
