Agent: Manchester United Must Decide Dimitar Berbatov's Future By Jan. 1Dimitar Berbatov‘s immediate future is in the hands of Manchester United. It must excercise the 2012-13 option his contract by Jan. 1, or he can leave on a free transfer at the end of this season, according to the Daily Mirror.

“Leverkusen have it on their minds to get Berbatov,” Berbatov’s agent Ivan Dobrinov told German newspaper Bild. “There is contact, but nothing concrete yet. It all depends on United’s plans. We wait until 2 January.

“Until then, United have the option but if that does not happen then Berbatov would be a free transfer in the summer.”

Berbatov was the joint-top scorer in last season’s Premier League, but he still fell behind Wayne Rooney and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez in the United pecking order in 2011.

The 30 year-old made his first Premier League start of the season on Monday and scored a hat-trick against West Brom.

Berbatoved joined United from Tottenham in 2008 for a club-record £30.75 million ($47.6 million). The report links him to a return to German club Bayer Leverkusen, but other clubs could be interested.
