DALLAS — It remains unclear whether the Red Sox will re-sign Tim Wakefield and Jason Varitek.

Although Ben Cherington has reached out to their camps, he maintained that the organization wasn't prepared to commit just yet.

In 2011, Varitek hit .221 with 11 homers and 36 RBIs. Meanwhile, Wakefield finished last year's campaign with a 7-8 record and tallied a 5.12 ERA through 154 2/3 innings pitched.

"I have a great deal of respect for [Wakefield and Varitek]," Cherington said. "I feel the best thing for the team and the best thing for them is if there's not a real role on the team, I'm not sure it's the right thing for them or the team, but we haven't gotten to that point yet."
